It’s because the way it was recorded, where, basically he was destroying the tapes as he was looping them. It sort of makes me think about the way that our memories sort of crack and fade over time…
So tell us a little about yourself.
I’m Anthony Kim, I’m AK Lingus on blue sky. I am an attorney in Southern California. I live in the Inland Empire, which is Riverside and San Bernardino counties, more or less. It’s about 45 miles east of Los Angeles. I wrote and self published a book a couple of months ago called The Secret Chord, which is available at link in bio, as they say. And yeah, that’s pretty much me. I’ve been collecting records now since 2012, over a decade.
So what got you started listening to records?
I grew up with my mom owning records. My mom’s more of an Abba head, but she did have Beatles records. She had a copy of Thriller because, I think that just came with the house when we moved into somewhere in the 80s. I remember she had, I want to say, an Aiwa stereo system, where the turntable was built into the top of the of the actual stereo system, and then you had the tape decks and all that, which was,really, really convenient for home taping and all that stuff. And so I remember listening to Abbey Road on it. My mom, for whatever reason, owned I Want You, the Marvin Gaye album. And I very distinctly remember listening to the last track, After the Dance, over and over, because I liked it so much so I would pick the needle up after song finished, put it back onto the groove. Do that a couple times. And one ne of the records in my collection goes back to when I still lived with my mom when I was a teenager in Fairfax, Virginia. I went to Georgetown back when they still had dedicated record stores, and I bought this guy right here [holds up record]. It’s Oasis’ debut album, Definitely Maybe. I was a huge Oasis head by that point. So I probably bought this somewhere summer of ‘96, maybe 97 somewhere around there,. I think I bought it for like 20 or 25 bucks, because, in the 90s, the vinyl revival wasn’t anywhere close to happening yet. So you could still get newer records for relatively cheap. And the bargain bins really were bargain bins. I looked it up on Discogs before this interview, and I think this is something like $240 now,. So I was really lucky, actually, because my mom has moved twice since I bought that record, and she took it with her both times. So when I came back from when I came to visit her, one of the years after I actually started collecting records. She still had it in the closet, and I was very, very thankful for that.
So your mom got you started you on records. What made you pick it up again later on?
So what made me pick it up again was my best friend from high school, Mark. So Mark’s dad collected records. Mark’s dad was in the army, so he was in stationed in Europe for the 60s. I hope I’m getting this correct. So he got all of the actual UK Beatles albums, Hendrix, he basically gifted Mark this gigantic record collection. It was really enviable. And so Mark’s been collecting records for more or less his entire life, and he really sort of pushed me into it. He kept talking about what purchases he got, how cool a record sounds, all of that. And I did want to eventually get back into it. I just didn’t really have the time to dedicate and the money. And once I graduated, once I finished up law school.- this is in the summer of 2012 - my folks gave me a little bit of cash as a as a present for getting my JD and I spent it on on a turntable and two records. The two records were (Radiohead’s) In Rainbows, the more common version. I’ve since upgraded to the deluxe LP, which is one of the best sounding albums in my collection. They’re both 45 (rpm) so they sound fantastic. And and Highway 61 Revisited was the other one. I bought a new copy of that. And the turntable, I don’t think it was Crosley. It was one of those sorts of brands. It had the speakers built into the side. So I didn’t realize at the time I wasn’t exactly purchasing audiophile equipment. But, you know, for a starter, it was pretty cool. It wa alright to have. And then I was still living in San Diego, and a couple months later, I actually found a stereo receiver on eBay, the one that’s actually behind me now, which, funny enough, as a full circle thing, is the kind of stereo receiver that my mom had when I was growing up, like the exact one, yeah. So it was, it was a neat bit of a of symmetry, I think. So that’s what I use now. I have a pretty basic setup. I’ve got that stereo receiver. I’ve got a pair of ELAC bookshelf speakers, which I’ve had for, I don’t know, six or seven years now. They sound really, really good. And I have a ION turntable with an automatic arm that moves back and forth, and it gets the job done. It’s pretty good.
Do you have a white whale record?
I actually have two of them. I’m fairly certain I’m never going to be able to land them, but they are the two records, if I get them, I’m pretty much done. So the first one is a test pressing of Since I Left You, the Avalanches album. It was originally just called The Album, and the original version that the Avalanches put together had a ton of extra samples that there was just no chance they were going to clear. I believe one of the songs had a sample of dialogue from “Midnight Run,” the movie with Charles Grodin. There were a couple other samples that they ended up having to excise. There was an entire song that they ended up cutting. The the original version of the album was pressed to wax, and then they had to strip out a number of those samples and then put out the version that everybody knows today. Interestingly enough, there are a couple different versions of the album on vinyl, like the US version, they actually had to re-record a couple of the songs because they lost even more of the rights to the sample. So like Frontier Psychiatrist, they had to re-record the vocal samples, which makes it sound a lot different and a lot worse. I’m lucky to have a UK version that has all the original samples. So that’s one of the my white whales, the test pressing for that album. And the other one is also a test pressing. It’s for the original Blood on the Tracks. You know that for Record Store Day, they actually put out a version of the test pressing, which I have, the record store version of the Blood on the Tracks test press. Yeah,it’s fantastic. I’ve come to the opinion over the years that the original version that was recorded in New York, is the superior one. It’s not as commercial, it’s a lot more downbeat. It’s almost entirely acoustic. It’s just him and his guitar, and then one of the band members of Deliverance who he recorded with in Minnesota, I get that mixed up, but it was just him and a bass player, basically in New York that recorded all of these songs. And the original test pressing in Amoeba records in LA used to have a copy of it for something like 10 or $20,000 or something. And obviously that’s something I can never afford. But if I ever, you know, win the lottery or something like that…
What record do you own now that you consider your greatest acquisition?
So it wasn’t so much a score as it was a gift. But it’s a really nice story. I posted on a message board for the band Phish for many years, and I made a couple of good friends on there. And one day, one of my friends said, I have a surprise for you. Message me your address and I will send it to you. I can tell you what it is if you really want, but I prefer that you be surprised. So I gave him my address, and about two weeks later,[Disintegration Loops] came in the mail.
So I love this album. It’s really emotionally affecting for me in particular. It makes me think a lot about mortality. It makes me think a lot about the way that our memories work. It’s because the way it was recorded, where, basically he was destroying the tapes as he was looping them. It sort of makes me think about the way that our memories sort of crack and fade over time and become harder and harder to fully grasp, you know, just sort of like yellowing newsprints. And I wrote a little miniature essay about that on the (Phish) website. It was after one of my friends had passed away, and I guess he remembered it, and he remembered that I really liked this. So one of his friends was moving and had this box set, and was going to just throw it out, not even sell it, which you can sell it for quite a bit of money, but he was just getting rid of it. And he was like, No, I know somebody that could use it. So he just sent it to me for no money, just as a gift. And it’s a sort of gift you can’t really repay.
That’s a great story.
t makes me so happy thinking about it every time I take a look at this thing, and I have actually gone through it once. It’s the sort of thing where you have to take it in chunks, because it is such a harrowing listening experience and it’s so long, but I have listened to it all the way through, and there’s a there’s a live performance on CD that was done on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 which is also really, really cool.
Tell me about your favorite record store.
It’s Amoeba Records I would say probably go there two or three times a month. There are other places in LA that I like a lot. I’m lucky also to have a pretty good record store in in the Inland Empire. It’s called Rhino Records, like the label, but it’s not affiliated with the label. It’s located in Claremont, or it used to be located in Claremont. It’s now located in Montclair, which is about 20 minutes away from me, but Amoeba is my favorite, for sure. I do kind of miss the old location. Did you ever go to Amoeba Records the old location in Los Angeles?
I believe so, because I was there in 2010.
So that would be the one where, the one that, was actually two stories. The location that it’s in now, is still very, very big, it still stuns tourists, But the original, it really was like, going to Sears or Woolworths or something like that. But for records, it was just ridiculous. I can still remember, I still got in my mind’s eye, where everything was, where the CD racks were, where the vinyl racks were. There was a glass case that had only rare 78s in it.
Do yo have a favorite live record?
If we were talking about CDs it would probably be one of, like 300 Grateful Dead shows. Talking strictly vinyl, I would probably have To say (The Who’s) Live at Leeds. The original version is perfect in its own way, like it’s just like this beautifully curated slice of hard rock that I really love, and I like the crackling noises as well. I do have the the three LP version, that’s the complete show that they were able to actually split up so that it’s in chronological order. The CD version that came out in 2002 or whatever it was, they had to split it up so that all of Tommy was on one CD, and then all the other songs were on the other CD. But the way that the concert actually went, they played nine songs, and then all of Tommy, and then a couple more songs. So the original Live at Leeds would probably be my favorite. There’s a label called Real Gone Music that’s pressing all of the original Dick’s Picks, Grateful Dead Live series and I actually do have a couple of them. They’re working with the Dead organization, so that they’re they’re able to have access to the actual original tapes, like early versions of the of the Dick’s Picks on vinyl were were cut with digital transfers. But the ones that they’re doing now are actually from the original analog tapes, and when they get to volume four, which is the the February 13 and 14, 1970 shows from the Fillmore east, that will probably take over as my favorite live album on vinyl.
What’s the weirdest record you own
Destiny by DJ Sabrina, the Teenage DJ, so like it’s, it’s, it’s plunderphonics, it’s mashups, and this particular mashup is, I think, three and a half hours long. It’s done so smoothly that you could mistake it for AI, but it’s not, the the the artist has been very, very adamant that she does not use AI. There’s a lot of, there’s a lot more R & B influence in it than like something like Girl Talk, but I just love the fact that I have three and a half hour mas up mixtape on vinyl, and it sounds great.
what’s your favorite vinyl buying story?
I told it on Twitter. But. I did want to relay it here, because I do enjoy it so much. So one of my other favorite record stores is is Record City in San Diego. It’s moved now. It’s moved closer to the beaches. But when I live in San Diego, it was in Hillcrest, which is a more artsy neighborhood of San Diego. It’s also like a really big LGBTQ plus neighborhood.
This was the same summer that I actually started collecting records. And so one of the things that the owner would do is he would go to record shows, and hee would just buy lots and lots of records, and then just sort of stack them up on the floor, against the wall, so they would just sort of like stick out. And I was going through them, and found this original Let it Be, this is the Twin/Tone version, so like an original press from the 80s. And I was walking up to the counter with it, and somebody saw me with it, and he went up to me, and he said “is that? Is that an original copy of Let it Be” And I said yeah. He said, I’ve, uh, I’ve never actually seen this before. Are you gonna buy it? And I said, yeah. And he said, “Can I hold it?” And I I looked at the I looked at him, I looked at the record store owner, and I looked it back and said, yeah, sure. So I gave it to him. He just held it, he just looked at it for couple minutes, and then just handed it right back to me. So it was one of those things where that’s really struck me how much this hobby means to people.
